Isola, 15 years ahead of its time

This project, my degree project, is an example of how innovative one can be when focusing on the user. At the time, 1992, it was perhaps visionary. Today several of the technologies and solutions in this concept are commonly available.

The basic idea is simple - an alarm clock with ear plugs you wear on your head. But how do you design this so that it feels okay, and not intrusive or banale?

Interviews with scientists showed that all bio rhythms follow each other - body temperature, pulse, brain temperature and degree of conscience/sleep. So with simple electronics you could actually adjust the exact moment of awakening some minutes, based on your sleep this night, so that you could be awakened at the most suitable time.

Levels of advancement

Exploration of how sophisticated the first edition of such a product should be - from a cheap "ear plug alarm" to a full "sleep condition system".

Values and expression

Exploration of values and expressions.

Exploded view

Exploration of a design for cost efficient production with very few parts.

Design model

Design model. (plastic, textile)

Nowadays you can actually find products of this kind, for example Axbo and also Sleeptracker (as seen in dr Phil on TV!)

But there is no integrated sleeping mask with this functionality. Yet.
